Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Postgraduate Association of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, I would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to all of the overseas students who will study at our university.

It gives me great pleasure to make some practical suggestions to you.
Life at this prestigious university may not be as relaxing as you expected.
Set high personal and academic standards for yourself, and live up to them.
You must work hard to respond to numerous lessons, lots of homework and countless exams.
Listen to that little voice inside you that says, “I can do this.” Believe in yourself. Realize that school is work; it’s not play time.
Get to know a wide range of people – faculty, staff, and students.
Networking is important. It is often true that who you know is just as important as what you know.
Use your acquaintances to advantage, but don’t take advantage of them.
In spite of all these challenges, you can still enjoy your life here.
It is strongly advised that you take part in various extracurricular activities like sports meets, speech contests, social gatherings and dances, which can provide you with ample opportunities to make friends.

All in all, studying at this university will be worthwhile.
I hope you will enjoy yourselves here!

Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

Dear Friends,

On behalf of Class 2, I warmly invite you to attend the Dragon Boat Festival celebration.

The Dragon Boat Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan. The festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is a traditional Chinese festival for family members to gather together.
Aside from the dragon boat racing, we Chinese people also eat the traditional food for the festival——zongzi.
Considering that some students cannot have a reunion with their families during this festival, our class has decided to hold this celebration to make everyone feel love and friendship on this special day.

If you are interested in participating in the celebration, please fill in your personal information on our school website.
The activity will be held in the Student Recreation Center from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on June 10.

Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

Dear Friends,

I am writing the email to introduce one of the most prestigious Chinese celebrities to you, Confucius.

Confucius was a Chinese philosopher and politician of the Spring and Autumn period who is traditionally considered the paragon of Chinese sages. Confucius’s teachings and philosophy underpin East Asian culture and society, remaining influential across China and East Asia to this day.
Confucius’s principles have commonality with Chinese tradition and belief. With filial piety, he championed strong family loyalty, ancestor veneration, and respect of elders by their children and of husbands by their wives, recommending family as a basis for ideal government. He espoused the Golden Rule, “Do not do unto others what you do not want done to yourself”.

Much of Confucian thought on Heaven and Man represents universal human values.
This is perhaps why Confucian thought in the 21st century still remains the interest of not only the Chinese people but also people in other parts of the world.

Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

To Whom It May Concern,

I would like to thank you for arranging to meet with me for an interview at 10:00 am on Monday, November 7th.

Unfortunately, I have recently been diagnosed with a serious ear infection which will require surgery on the same day as our interview.
I am sorry to say that I will therefore not be able to take the interview and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
If possible, I would like to postpone the interview to another day later in the week.

I promise that such a thing does not usually happen.
I am looking forward to hearing from you and, again, am sorry for any trouble this may have caused you.
Please kindly excuse me for not being able to inform you of my situation sooner.

Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

Dear Wang Lei,

Thank you very much for those five wonderful days at your house!
Every moment was a delight.
I can’t remember ever having enjoyed myself so thoroughly elsewhere.

This is to tell you again how much I enjoyed the weekend in Hangzhou.
Everything was just perfect: the weather, your company, the beautiful surroundings-no wonder I’m finding it difficult to get down to reading this morning!
The classroom life seems so dull and prosaic compared to the days in Hangzhou.

I hope you know how much I appreciate your hospitality and your thoughtful kindness to me.
I count myself fortunate indeed to have such a generous and charming friend as you.
I hope something will bring you to Beijing soon so that I can reciprocate your great kindness.

Yours,
Li Ming

Dear Sir or Madam,

I write to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received while staying at your hotel during my vacation between the 2nd and 11th of April this year.

Although your hotel is rated as a five-star one, I found that the rooms were not cleaned on a daily basis, and that my bed was cleaned up only every three days.
In addition, the food in the restaurant was similarly disappointing.
Not only was it extremely overpriced, but the taste was very poor. was therefore forced to eat out in the local restaurants.

I trust you will take my complaints seriously, and make every effort to improve your service in the future.
I would greatly appreciate a discount on my bill (receipt enclosed).
I look forward to a favorable reply at your earliest convenience.

Jack.

I feel most embarrassed about referring to a rather difficult subject.
I wonder if it may have slipped your mind that nearly three months ago you asked me for a loan of RMB 500.
You said you would pay me back on the next payday.
Is it possible that you pay it back within 2 weeks?
I am sure you will agree and not be offended by my request.

Here is a piece of good news for you.
The Russian State Ballet, which is now on tour in Beijing, will give a performance in the National Center for the Performing Arts tomorrow evening.
I am sure you will be happy to watch it.
Here I leave you a ticket.
The performance will begin at seven o’clock sharp.
I will expect you at the theater entrance. Please let me know if you can’t make it.
